The short verdict on janitor ai vs character ai: pick Janitor AI if you are an adult who wants to choose or bring the model behind your characters, and pick Character.AI if you want its large character library and can live with memory sold in pins while the company goes through a court-supervised sale. For an adult who wants neither the setup nor the uncertainty, YourCrush.AI is the pick: there is no key or proxy to connect, you build a character from a name and an image, and the facts your character must keep are pinned memories you can read and edit. Every competitor fact below was read on that app's own pages as of 16 October 2026.
A character chat platform is a site or app where a language model plays a character that a user has written, in a running conversation. Janitor AI, from JanitorAI, INC, and Character.AI, from Character Technologies, Inc., are two of them, and they differ most on who may use them, which model answers you, and how memory is sold.
Not set on either? YourCrush.AI gives adults a character chat with no setup and memories you pin yourself.
How do Janitor AI and Character.AI compare side by side?
Janitor AI is the adult-only, swap-the-model platform; Character.AI is the one-model platform with counted memory pins and a teen product, now in Chapter 11. The table puts both next to YourCrush.AI on the six things people actually switch over.

Why YourCrush.AI is the better choice for adults who want character chat without setup
YourCrush.AI skips both of those steps: there is no model to connect, and you decide what the character remembers by pinning it. YourCrush.AI is 18+ only, so it sits on Janitor AI's side of the age rule.
YourCrush.AI builds a character with no code from a name, an image, a description, a backstory and a greeting on the character creator, and it drafts those fields for you from a name and an image if you would rather edit than write. YourCrush.AI lets you choose traits and speaking-style words, which is where a voice gets set without a script layer. YourCrush.AI keeps the facts you pin as memories, in a list you can read and edit, so the detail a scene depends on is one you chose. YourCrush.AI branches a story, so a "what if" scene runs without overwriting the main thread. A library of ready-made characters is on the explore page, and conversations are not sold to third parties.

Which one lets younger users in, and how is age checked?
Janitor AI admits nobody under 18, and Character.AI keeps under-18 accounts but without open-ended chat. That single difference explains most of the "janitor ai or character ai" searches.
Janitor AI's minor-related content policy, updated 21 August 2026, says its services are "exclusively intended for an audience above the age of 18" and that users "reasonably suspected" to be under 18 "will be permanently banned from the platform." In Australia, Brazil and the UK, the check is verified rather than self-declared: the age verification article, updated 15 June 2026, names k-ID as the provider, with a selfie video analysed on the device, a government ID photo, or an existing Discord or Snapchat verification, and says "Janitor receives only a yes/no answer on whether you are over 18."
Character.AI went the other way. Its announcement of 29 October 2025 said it was "removing the ability for users under 18 to engage in open-ended chat with AI on our platform," effective "no later than November 25," using an age assurance model "built in-house" together with "third-party tools including Persona." Teens keep "creating videos, stories, and streams with Characters."
Which is easier to set up?
Character.AI wins on setup. You sign up, you chat on the company's models, and there's nothing to connect. Janitor AI also works out of the box, but its best-known feature is the option to bring a different model, and that option takes setup and a second bill.
The Janitor AI glossary calls JLLM "the default model used in Janitor unless you've hooked up an external one via API," and defines a proxy as "a little tech wizardry that lets you use external models (like Claude or GPT) inside Janitor." Since 30 July 2026 there's an official route as well. The Router announcement describes it as "a simpler, more integrated alternative to the third-party proxies," "billed per token at the prices shown," with "$5 in free Router credits" for subscribers, and "only available on web" for now. Whatever model you bring in, it's a cost on top of any subscription.
My view: the swappable model is the reason enthusiasts pick Janitor AI, and the reason casual users bounce off it. If the phrase "API key" makes you close the tab, that's a real answer to which is better for you.
Which remembers more, Janitor AI or Character.AI?
Janitor AI describes memory as a context size. Character.AI describes it as a count of pins plus adjectives. Neither one gives a free user a long memory.
On Janitor AI, the subscription FAQ, updated 25 June 2026, lists a free "Context limit of around 9k tokens," and janitor+ adds "5x more context for better memory." The site never prints the paid figure itself, which I find genuinely annoying when I'm trying to compare tiers. The App Store notes for version 2.5.0 mention "Improved comments, replies, and Chat Memory" without saying what Chat Memory stores (App Store).
On Character.AI, the c.ai+ page shows Pins at 15 on Free and 30 on lite and c.ai+, and Memory labelled Basic, Better and Best across those tiers. The memory post of 21 May 2026 explains that you long-press a message and tap Pin "to lock it into Story Memory," and that "Facts is a (c.ai+) feature," saving details such as appearance and relationships automatically.

How does character creation differ?
Both platforms run on characters their users write, and both have a lore layer. Janitor AI adds scripts and a written persona for you, the user. Character.AI puts its advanced lore tool behind its top plan.
Janitor AI's App Store notes list "Scripts (lorebooks + advanced scripts)" in version 2.6.0 and "characters, personas, and scripts" on the My Page screen (App Store). Its help article What Makes A Good Persona?, updated 11 August 2026, describes the persona as "descriptive information about {{user}}" and recommends "Around 500 tokens or less." On Character.AI, the c.ai+ page rates the Lorebook "Basic" on Free and lite and "Adv." on c.ai+.
Our reading: Janitor AI gives a creator more levers at no charge, and Character.AI gives a casual creator less to learn. A creator who wants depth without writing scripts is the person neither one quite serves.
Which costs less, janitor+ or c.ai+?
c.ai+ costs less per month, and it is the only one of the two with a yearly price. Both apps are free to start.
Janitor AI's launch announcement of 24 June 2026 calls janitor+ "our first-ever subscription product" at "$12.99/month," and says the free version "stays exactly the same, and stays completely free." The App Store listing shows one in-app purchase, Janitor+ Monthly at $12.99. The FAQ says subscriptions "are generally non-refundable, except where required by our Terms of Service or applicable law."
Character.AI's App Store listing shows Character.AI+ at $9.99 and $94.99, Character.AI Lite at $4.99, and Charms packs from $0.99 to $49.99. The c.ai+ page shows the yearly plan at $94.99, struck from $119.88. Over a year, janitor+ is $155.88 at the monthly price, against $94.99 for yearly c.ai+, and an outside model on Janitor AI is billed on top.
Is Character.AI still safe to pick while it is in bankruptcy?
It is running, but you would be signing up to an app whose future owner is unknown. Character.AI says users can still reach all of its services, and that the platform "will be wound down" only if the sale does not produce a bid that keeps it running (Character.AI).
Its parent filed for Chapter 11 on 12 October 2026, and the company expects the sale to finish "by the end of November or perhaps early December 2026" (Character.AI). Disney's $20 million stalking-horse bid is for a license to certain intellectual property, not the app (NBC News, reporting Reuters). Paid subscriptions stay active and billing is unchanged, per the same company update. If you already use it, export your data before the bid deadline. The company says export still works through the app or website.
Janitor AI shows no such event on its own pages. Its app took an update in October 2026 (version 2.7.0, App Store). For anyone choosing a home for characters today, that difference outweighs a few dollars a month.

Frequently asked questions
Is Janitor AI better than Character.AI?
It depends on what you want. If you're an adult who wants to pick the model, write scripts, and build personas, Janitor AI gives you that control. If you'd rather have one account, a huge library, and nothing to configure, Character.AI is the simpler pick, though it's currently in a court-supervised sale (Character.AI).
How do you use other AI models on Janitor AI?
Two ways. A proxy, which the glossary says "lets you use external models (like Claude or GPT) inside Janitor," or Router, which is web-only for janitor+ subscribers and billed per token (Janitor AI).
Can you have personas on Janitor AI?
Yes. Janitor AI's help article What Makes A Good Persona? describes a persona as information about you, the user, and suggests keeping it to around 500 tokens or less.
Is Janitor AI free?
Yes. The free tier includes "Unlimited chats with millions of bots" and a context limit of around 9K tokens, and janitor+ runs $12.99 a month (Janitor AI FAQ, App Store).
Do you need ID to use Janitor AI?
Only in Australia, Brazil, and the UK, where k-ID checks age by on-device selfie video, government ID, or an existing Discord or Snapchat verification. Everywhere else, the 18+ rule is enforced by policy and bans (Janitor AI).
Is Character.AI shutting down?
Not right now. It's running during a court-supervised sale and will only be wound down if no bid keeps the platform running (Character.AI).
